Igualmente la administración de micronutrientes mejora el crecimiento y previene deficiencias que son causa de importantes enfermedades. Los cuidadores en general son los responsables de facilitar o limitar este proceso. El presente estudio tiene como objetivo identificar los conocimientos, actitudes y prácticas del cuidador del menor de 5 años frente a la alimentación complementaria y uso de micronutrientes en el municipio de Cúcuta, durante el I semestre de 2011. La investigación es de carácter descriptivo, cuantitativo en el que participaron 339 cuidadores de las unidades básicas Puente Barco Leones, Libertad y Comuneros. El instrumento utilizado fue cuestionario de “Prácticas claves” diseñado por la Organización Panamericana de la Salud (OPS) en la estrategia Atención Integral a las Enfermedades Prevalentes de la Infancia (AIEPI) y adaptado para la región por el Instituto departamental de Salud (IDS) del Norte de Santander. Los resultados demuestran que la introducción de alimentos complementarios se ha realizado en forma oportuna en el 70% de los casos, el destete precoz se ha dado en un 30,08% cuando se inicia ablactación, así mismo se identifica el bajo nivel de conocimientos respecto a la necesidad de introducir micronutrientes en la dieta de los menores de 5 años y sobre los alimentos donde pueden ser hallados. En ausencia de la madre, el cuidador principal del menor ha sido la abuela en el 75% de los casos, dentro de las cuales, algunas imparten el cuidado de acuerdo a sus conocimientos y creencias.</p><p><strong>Palabras clave: </strong>Alimentación del menor, cuidador, micronutrientes</p><p><strong>Abstract</strong></p><p>Complementary feeding starts properly on the child, allows efficient growth and development. Providing micronutrients also improved growth and prevents deficiencies that cause major diseases. Caregivers are generally responsible for facilitate or limit this process. The present study has as a purpose to identify the knowledge, attitudes and practices of the caregiver for children under 5 years face the use of complementary feeding and micronutrients in Cucuta city , during the first semester of 2011. The research is descriptive, quantitative, involving 339 caregivers of the basic units "Puente Barco Leones, Libertad and comuneros.” The instrument used was a questionnaire of "key practices" designed by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) in the strategy for Integrated Care Management of Childhood Illness (IMCI) and adapted to the region by the Departmental Institute of Health (IDS) North of Santander. The results show that the introduction of complementary foods has been done in a timely manner in 70% of cases, early weaning has been a 30.08% when you start weaning, and it identifies the level of knowledge about the need for micronutrients in the diet of children under 5 years and the food where it can be found. In the absence of the mother, the child’s primary caregiver was the grandmother in 75% of cases.
