Abstract

Doctoral education in nursing enables the professional to acquire essentials that allows him/her to assume a critical attitude on the construction, evolution and evaluation of the theory. This paper presents the way how the disciplinary component of Nursing has evolved. To set up the reflection, a commentary by J. Fawcett (2003) is presented. The commentary is about the importance of knowledge both on the nursing discipline as well as on the necessary fundamentals to carry out activities such as bathing in bed. Next, a review on the different kinds of theories, from the point of view of its applicability, isdone. Nursing has been acknowledged by society. During the process of its disciplinary development it has had to demonstrate that it owns a separate domain, it has a specific syntactical and conceptual structure, it expresses itself with specialized language and symbols, it collects the heritage of literature and tradition, it has communication networks, it recognizes moral values and beliefs, and it reinforces education through systems which belong exclusively to it. Finally, the importance of practice –and the research derived from it, to the disciplinary development of nursing, is highlighted.
