Abstract

Introduction: The family of the acute patient entering the emergency department wishes to actively accompany
them in their care. However, family members are sometimes distanced due to various factors, generating
emotions that directly impact the family in the emergency area.
Objective: To describe evidence related to emotions of the family member of the acute patient in the emergency
department found in the literature.
Results: A scoping review was conducted on databases including PubMed, EBSCO, Embase, BVS, and Web of
Science, in English, Spanish, and Portuguese. Critical reading and selection led to 17 articles. Three thematic
axes were identified: Importance of family in the Emergency Department, responses transcending emotions, and
family needs.
Review Method: Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) guidelines for Scoping Review were adopted to describe literature
on emotions of the family member of the acute patient in the emergency department. Descriptive synthesis
supported by tables and graphics.
Conclusions: The crucial importance of family presence in emergencies influences care quality. Complex
emotional responses and diverse family needs highlight the need for empathetic and culturally adapted
approaches. However, a limitation is identified in specific research and adapted tools.
