Preparation of the parents for the discharge of the premature infant: concept analysis

Preparação dos pais para a alta hospitalar da criança prematura: Análise de conceito

Abstract

Introduction: The care that premature infant receive at home is crucial for their health and well-being; consequently, preparation for discharge from the neonatal unit is a critical process. In this review the concept preparing the parents of premature infant for discharge, is analyzed to facilitate their description in nursing practice and nursing research. Methodology: Integrative literature review. 21 articles published in SCIELO, LILACS and PUBMED, between 2009 and 2019, in English, Spanish and Portuguese, were analyzed. The descriptors were: Nursing, Premature infant, Discharge, Parents. Concept analyzed under Walker and Avant method; attributes, antecedents and consequences of the concept were identified. Results: The attributes were: knowledge and skills for the care, emotional preparation of parents and social support networks. As an Antecedents were identified the birth of the premature infant and parental involvement in the discharge process. Finally, identified consequences included the reduction in the number of hospital readmissions, an increase in the satisfaction of the parents and the enjoyment of the parental role. Conclusion: The neonatal unit should be a space where parents develop emotional, physical and cognitive skills for the care of their children through the process of preparation for discharge. This concept should also involve social support networks for home care.
