Design of green roofs and vertical gardens on buildings as sustainable urban drainage systems

Diseño de techos verdes y jardines verticales como sistemas urbanos de drenaje sostenible en edificaciones

Main Article Content

Abstract

Urbanization reduces vegetation in built areas, resulting in the increased runoff, causing flooding during rainfall events. This work developed a design of green roofs and vertical gardens, as a useful alternative for a sustainable urban drainage system, in buildings of the Universidad Francisco de Paula Santander, San José de Cúcuta, Colombia. The structural analysis of the buildings was carried out with Etabs® software, which was used to compare the initial design of the building without loads on the roof with the loads generated by the different types of green roofs. Climatic and environmental conditions were reviewed to establish the appropriate characteristics of the green roof components. Through the analysis of the results, it was obtained that the buildings identified as “Bienestar” and “Civil” have the capacity to resist the loads added by a green roof system identified as “extensive”, so it is feasible to implement this type of green roof. Images for the design of green roofs and vertical gardens were generated. It is concluded that the implementation of green roof systems represents, in buildings, a tool to mitigate the impacts of urbanization and improve landscape conditions.
